At the Chargers Invitational just days ago, JSerra systematically dismantled their schedule. They shut out Dos Pueblos 28-0. They routed Newport Harbor 23-6. They even crushed Trinity League rival Orange Lutheran 27-6 in what was supposed to be a highly competitive matchup.
I watched the tape from their August 14th game against Westlake. Westlake is no joke. They are a legitimate top-tier program that just beat Redondo Union 20-14. But against JSerra, they looked completely overwhelmed. The final score was 19-6, and honestly, it felt much worse.

Their issue right now is consistency on offense. You can hold a team like JSerra to 19 points, but if your offense stalls out in the red zone, you are going home with a loss. Westlake needs to find a reliable secondary target to take the pressure off their main playmakers if they want to climb higher in the top 10 rankings. Defenses are entirely too smart in 2026 to let one star player beat them.
What the Rankings Ignore
Here is my biggest problem with standard high school sports rankings. They reward raw win-loss records without looking at strength of schedule or tactical innovation.

When you look at programs like Downey or Woodbridge—both of whom JSerra easily handled this month—you see the gap. Those schools have incredible athletes. They really do. But they are running offensive systems that feel a year or two behind the curve. They are relying on athleticism rather than structural mismatches.
You cannot just outrun a top 10 defense anymore. You have to out-scheme them.
The Trinity League Monopoly
Let us talk about the geographic monopoly going on right now. The Trinity League is completely suffocating the competition.
It is not a coincidence that JSerra and Orange Lutheran are operating on a different planet. The financial backing, the coaching pedigrees, and the year-round athletic development programs at these private schools create an unfair advantage.
I am not knocking the hustle. Coach Ong built a legitimate powerhouse. But we have to acknowledge the reality of the situation. Public schools are playing an entirely different game. They are relying on multi-sport athletes who show up in late summer, while the elite private programs are running passing camps and 7-on-7 drills for months in advance.
This gap is only going to widen unless public school districts start treating flag football with the exact same seriousness as tackle football or basketball. That means better coaching stipends. That means priority field access for practice instead of fighting the soccer teams for turf time. That means real strength and conditioning programs tailored specifically for these girls.
The College Recruiting Pipeline
One massive angle that local newspapers consistently ignore is the recruiting impact of these rankings. Earning a spot in the top 10 is not just about local pride anymore. It is about college scholarships.
NAIA schools are already aggressively offering scholarships for women's flag football. The push for NCAA recognition is gaining serious momentum. The girls dominating these CIF fields today are the pioneers who will eventually get their education paid for through this sport.
When a team like JSerra secures a national profile, college scouts take notice. They watch the film. They look at how a receiver breaks out of her route or how a cornerback transitions her hips in space. The players in these top-ranked programs have a massive visibility advantage over kids playing for unranked public schools.
How to Actually Beat a Top 10 Team
I get asked this by coaches all the time. How do you stop a 36-game win streak? How do you beat a team that averages 30 points a game?
I will tell you what does not work. Playing a soft cover 3 zone and hoping their quarterback makes a mistake. Kate Meier will pick you apart all afternoon if you give her underneath routes.
If you want to pull an upset against a ranked giant, you need to execute on three non-negotiable fronts.
Disrupt the timing at the line of scrimmage
You cannot let elite receivers run free releases. Even though contact rules in flag football are strict, you have to use your legal positioning to reroute receivers. Make them take an extra step outside. That half-second hesitation is the only way your pass rush is going to get home before the ball comes out.
Pulling flags in space is everything
I watch so much film where a defense actually plays great coverage, the quarterback is forced to dump it off to the running back in the flat, and then two defenders completely miss the flag. A three-yard gain turns into a 25-yard touchdown. Elite teams do not miss flags. They break down, they track the hips, and they finish the play. If your team cannot pull flags reliably in open space, you do not belong anywhere near a top 10 list.
