A four-tonne hunk of metal is slamming into the Moon at roughly 8,700 kilometers per hour.

The object is a discarded upper stage from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. It originally flew back in January 2025 to boost Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lunar lander toward our nearest neighbor. Since then, gravity and solar radiation have quietly dragged the school bus-sized piece of space junk back toward a lunar collision.

People love to panic about space debris hitting Earth. But the real mess is happening out there in cislunar space, and almost nobody is regulating it.

What Happens When a Rocket Hits the Moon

Physics doesn't care about corporate branding. When the Falcon 9 upper stage hits the lunar surface near the Einstein crater, it won't trigger a planned explosive charge. Instead, its massive kinetic energy converts instantly into heat and severe shockwaves.

The impact will carve out a fresh crater roughly 20 to 30 meters wide and about five meters deep. More importantly, it kicks up a massive plume of dust and pulverized rock.

Astronomers and planetary scientists are tracking the event closely because accidental lunar impacts are rare. This is only the second documented time an uncontrolled rocket body has inadvertently struck the Moon. The first happened in March 2022, when a stray rocket body struck the far side. Because that older strike happened out of view, researchers missed real-time observation.

This time, the impact occurs on the Earth-facing side near the western limb. While you won't spot it with the naked eye, sensitive ground-based telescopes and orbiting spacecraft like NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea’s Danuri probe are capturing the data.

The Cislunar Debris Problem Nobody Wants to Solve

SpaceX isn't the only culprit here. Private companies and national space agencies routinely leave upper stages in chaotic, elongated orbits once their primary missions wrap up.

Out of sight means out of mind for most people. But as astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell and other orbital mechanics experts point out, this habit is becoming a liability.

Think about the next decade. Space agencies plan to build permanent crewed outposts and automated resource-extraction facilities on the lunar surface. Leaving four-ton metal tubes careening wildly through cislunar space is asking for disaster.

If a stray piece of space junk hyper-accelerates into a future lunar base, a cargo lander, or an astronaut outside a habitat, the consequences go from mildly interesting to catastrophic.

Can We Fix Space Trash Before It Gets Worse?

Right now, clearing orbital pathways around Earth gets plenty of attention. Low-Earth orbit has strict de-orbit guidelines. Companies must prove they can burn up spacecraft in our atmosphere or push them into designated graveyard orbits.

The space between Earth and the Moon operates like the Wild West.

Missions heading to lunar trajectories often lack strict end-of-life disposal requirements for their upper stages. Changing a rocket's trajectory after a lunar injection requires keeping reserve propellant. Companies hate wasting fuel on trash disposal because every kilogram saved means a heavier, more profitable payload.

Until international space regulators or domestic authorities like the FAA force launch providers to manage deep-space upper stages properly, we will keep watching these preventable crashes.
